Osteomyelitis in New Jersey

Whether you live in Cedar Knolls, NJ or a surrounding area, bone infections can present a serious risk to your health, which is why Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgeons are the premiere osteomyelitis surgeons in the region.

What is Osteomyelitis?

Osteomyelitis is really just a fancy word for infection-related inflammation of the bone, caused by bacteria (often Staphylococcus aureus) that entered the region through the bloodstream. In the instance of osteomyelitis, the white blood cells in a patient’s body will attack the bacteria in an effort to remove them, but as the white blood cells consume them, enzymes are released that break down the bone and cause it to die.

While most individuals experience osteomyelitis in their legs, arms, or spine, it is possible to contract the condition in the feet, which is most prevalent among diabetes patients with foot ulcers.

Benefits of Osteomyelitis Surgery

Regardless of where your osteomyelitis is present, bone infections can be serious business. Despite the importance of treating osteomyelitis as early as possible, some patients experience no symptoms, while others may experience pain or swelling in the infected area, fever or chills, or mood changes in children, especially related to irritability or lethargy.

However, after your osteomyelitis surgery is complete, you may experience:

  • Reduced or eliminated pain and swelling
  • Improved mood or energy level

How is Osteomyelitis Surgery Performed?

In a procedure called debridement, the surgeon removes as much of the diseased bone as possible, taking a small margin of healthy bone to ensure that all the infected areas have been removed. Surrounding tissue that shows signs of infection also may be removed.

Preparing for Osteomyelitis Surgery

Due to the potentially life-threatening nature of osteomyelitis, it is likely that you will have been hospitalized and treated with antibiotics prior to your surgery. Because of this, be sure to let the friendly staff at Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgeons know about your medical history, known drug allergies, insurance information, and a list of any questions or concerns you may have.

Osteomyelitis Surgery Recovery

Most cases of osteomyelitis are successfully treated, although not always through non-surgical methods. In more advanced cases, osteomyelitis surgery may entail removing the diseased bone, restoring blood flow to the region, and draining the area of any pus or liquid that may inhibit healing.

After your osteomyelitis surgery, you will need to follow your doctor’s orders to the letter in order to ensure proper healing, which we will fully discuss with you well in advance.
