Joint Replacement Surgery in New Jersey
Joint replacement surgery is a big decision, and our professional staff at Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgeons in Cedar Knolls, NJ is here to walk you through the process.
What is Joint Replacement Surgery?
Joint replacement surgery, also known as a replacement arthroplasty, involves replacing a damaged or non-functioning joint with a prosthesis.
Joint replacement surgery is generally a last resort and is a viable option only when other, less invasive treatments have failed to provide the desired result. Joints can become damaged or non-functional for a wide variety of reasons, including trauma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and much more.
Benefits of Joint Replacement Surgery
The benefits you will experience after your joint replacement surgery depend heavily on what you were experiencing beforehand.
- Increased mobility of the joint
- Reduced pain and swelling
- The ability to enjoy everyday activities once again
How is Joint Replacement Surgery Performed?
While knee and hip replacements are the most common types of joint replacement surgery, ankle replacement is close behind. The prosthetic joints used in surgery can be made of ceramic, titanium carbide, silica, silicon nitride, and many others.
Joint replacement surgery is designed to replace the damaged cartilage and any associated loss of bone structure.
Preparing for Joint Replacement Surgery
Prior to undergoing a joint replacement surgery, several tests may be performed, including blood workups, urine analysis, x-rays, and selecting the appropriate joint size and design based on your specific diagnosis.
As the surgery date draws near, your Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgeons physician may recommend decreasing (or stopping altogether) the use of certain medications and will likely require that you not consume food past midnight on the day before the surgery.
Also, be sure that any relevant medical paperwork from other physicians is on file, as well as a copy of your insurance information, especially if your insurance company requires pre-authorization.
Joint Replacement Surgery Recovery
After an average stay of 4-7 days in the hospital, you will return home with instructions to use the affected joint only as necessary. Then, once the joint has had sufficient time to heal from surgery, you may need to go through rehabilitation exercises to slowly improve your strength.
