Pediatric Intoeing in New Jersey

Whether your child’s intoeing is mild or severe, the professionals at Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgeons can help patients in and around Morris County, NJ region.

What is Pediatric Intoeing?

Intoeing is diagnosed when a child has toes that point inward when walking, and most often occurs with children less than 2 years of age. This is often the result of muscle weakness, a curved foot (Metatarsus Adductus), a twisted shin (Tibial Torsion) or a twisted thighbone (Femoral Anteversion).

Benefits of Intoeing Treatment

If your child is diagnosed with intoeing, the good news is that most cases correct themselves naturally as they age, and generally do not cause pain or other adverse effects. If not, the condition can typically be corrected using special corrective footwear and/or braces. However, in a worst-case scenario, your child may need to undergo surgery, such as a lengthening of the Achilles tendon.

Whichever treatment method our team of pediatric foot doctors recommend, here are some common benefits your child can expect to achieve:

  • Since your child’s toes will no longer point inward, it can boost self-esteem.
  • Your child will be less likely to trip, stumble or fall.

How is Pediatric Intoeing Treatment Performed?

Some infants are born with this problem and it goes away on its own. However, some serious cases require medical treatment.

A series of casts are applied to the infant’s feet and lower legs to correct the problem (usually around 8 months of age), before the baby starts to walk. This continues over several weeks.

If the problem persists well beyond infancy, surgery might be required to correct the problem. However, surgery is rarely needed.

Preparing for Pediatric Intoeing Treatment

As mentioned above, most intoeing treatments do not require surgery, and if any treatment is necessary, it typically only involves the use of casts and/or bracing. On the other hand, surgery may require some initial preparation, which your Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgeon doctor will discuss with you in detail beforehand.

Pediatric Intoeing Treatment Recovery

If using a cast or brace, no recovery time is involved with these types of intoeing treatments.

Surgery to correct your child’s intoeing will involve some form of aftercare, including dressing removal and reapplication, administering medication, and being on time to follow-up doctor’s visits.
