What is Ingrown Toenail Removal?
An ingrown toenail occurs when the outer portion of the nail curves and grows into the adjacent skin, resulting in irritation, swelling, redness and pain. If the ingrown toenail is severe enough it can puncture the skin. If left untreated it can result in an infection. Once this occurs, you may notice drainage from the area, and/or foul foot odor.
However your ingrown toenail manifests, it can be caused by a variety of factors, including ill-fitting shoes, trauma, fungal infections, and even heredity (some people are more prone to ingrown toenails. In severe cases, surgical removal can help alleviate the pain and discomfort.

How is Ingrown Toenail Removal Performed?
If conservative treatment is unsuccessful, the surgeon may perform a complete nail avulsion (removal). Depending on the severity, permanent removal of the nail root at the ingrown side may be advised.
In more severe cases, removal can also provide an opportunity to address secondary conditions such as the presence of fungus, drainage, and foul odor.
Preparing for Ingrown Toenail Removal
Because ingrown toenail removal is minor surgery, it’s generally performed in the Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgeons office and requires little to no preparation. However, we may require certain tests to be performed in advance, and if your removal is filed with your insurance company, we’ll need the relevant paperwork on file. In addition, we may request your medical history, and/or a list of drug allergies and any special accommodations you require.
Ingrown Toenail Removal Recovery
Recovery time related to your ingrown toenail removal will very likely be minimal, and simply involves monitoring the location for signs of infection. After the removal site heals though, you will want to follow proper trimming protocols and wear shoes that fit properly in order to prevent another ingrown toenail from appearing.
