Haglund’s Deformity in New Jersey

If you are experiencing pain in the back of your heel you may be living with Haglund’s Deformity, but the experts at Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgeons based in Cedar Hills, NJ, can put you on the road to recovery.

What is Haglund’s Deformity?

Haglund’s deformity (also known as “pump bump” and Retrocalcaneal Exostosis”) is a painful enlargement of the back of the heel bone that becomes irritated by shoes.

The primary cause of Haglund’s deformity is pressure on the back of the heel from shoes. However, the shape of your foot can contribute to the development of the deformity. If you have high arches, a tight Achilles tendon, or a tendency to walk on the outside of your feet, you are more likely to develop the condition.

Symptoms of Haglund’s Deformity

  • Noticeable bump on the back of the heel
  • Pain and swelling in the area where the Achilles tendon attaches to the heel
  • Redness near the inflamed tissue
  • Tenderness in the back of the heel

How is Treatment for Haglund’s Deformity Performed?

A ‘resection’ is a popular outpatient treatment used to remove the bony bump on the heel bone. With the aid of an endoscope, the surgeon will make a small incision on the back of the calcaneus (heel bone). To eliminate pressure on the soft tissues, the retrocalcaneal bursa and the bony bump are cut and reshaped. The incision is closed with sutures or staples.

Preparing for Haglund’s Deformity Treatment

We treat our patients “as if they were family” and you will receive your surgeon’s full attention before, during and after your procedure. We can even arrange for a patient who has had a similar procedure to share information with you in advance, to give you a well-rounded view of what you might expect during your own procedure and recovery.

Haglund’s Deformity Recovery

A splint may be required as the foot heals. Most patients will recover in four to six weeks. There are many advantages to having your heel pain evaluated and treated by the experienced and highly skilled surgeons at Advanced Foot & Ankle.

Some of our advanced, innovative procedures and surgical techniques include:

Extracorporeal Shockwave Treatment

This is one of the newest treatments for plantar fasciitis or “heel spur” syndrome. A non-invasive, out-patient procedure that is an alternative to surgery, it sends high energy pulses of acoustic waves into the bone and soft tissue, which allows the body to regenerate blood vessels to heal the plantar fascia. This process does not require any form of incision or sedation.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections

Platelet rich plasma is a groundbreaking treatment currently very popular in professional athletics. It consists of a special mixture of blood cells used to treat tendon and ligament damage. The physicians of Advanced Foot and Ankle Surgeons also uses this technology for other pathologies, such as plantar fasciitis and complicated wounds. Our understanding and use of PRP demonstrates one of the ways we stay on top of the current treatment therapies in the world of medicine.
