Flatfoot Surgery in New Jersey
If your flat feet are causing you pain or discomfort, the flatfoot surgery options available through Advanced Foot & Ankle Surgeons in Cedar Knolls, NJ can help you find relief.
What is Flatfoot Surgery?
While some cases of flatfoot don’t cause individuals any discomfort, in many instances it can lead to pains and aches in the feet, swelling, back or leg pain, and even difficulty moving your feet. While flat feet can often be addressed using non-surgical means such as rest, physical therapy and stretching exercises, orthotic devices, corticosteroid injections, and more, some patients are just not responsive.
In instances like these, flatfoot surgery may be required, the procedures for which depend heavily on whether your condition is caused by bone, ligament or tendon deformities.
Benefits of Flatfoot Surgery
By undergoing a flatfoot surgery to correct your condition, you can realistically expect to experience one or more of the following benefits:
- Reduced foot pain, as well as in the back or the legs
- Increased mobility
How is Flatfoot Surgery Performed?
Subtalar arthroereis or “STJ implantation” is a minimally invasive way to help relieve the symptoms of flat foot deformity or “collapsing arch.”
One viable option is to use a small implantable device that goes into a specific area of the ankle. This helps maintain the proper position of the ankle during walking and running.
This procedure requires only a very small incision. Patients are generally able to walk on the treated foot on the same day as the procedure.
Preparing for Flatfoot Surgery
- Stock up on supplies (food etc.) so you do not need to leave the house often.
- Enlist the help of your family and friends.
- Get some books and movies to occupy your time in the recovery period.
- Prepare your house. Move objects that will make it difficult to move from one room to another. Consider moving your bed to the ground floor.
Your Advanced Foot & Ankles Surgeons physician will make sure to fully explain any preparations you will need to make well in advance of your flatfoot surgery.
Flatfoot Surgery Recovery
Flatfoot surgeries are typically mild to moderate procedures, which means that you should be able to return home the same day as your surgery, although procedures that are more intensive may result in an overnight hospital stay. However, the total recovery time for your flatfoot surgery can be 12 weeks or longer, depending on numerous factors.
After returning home, you will wear a cast for a couple weeks while keeping your foot elevated, and will pay extra attention not to put any weight on it for up to 8 weeks.
