Where Does it Hurt? The Heel

Common conditions affecting the heel include:

Plantar Fasciitis

Also known as “Heel Spur Syndrome”, heel pain is most often caused by plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the band of tissue that extends from the heel to the toes. Click here for more information, including treatment options.

Tarsal Tunnel

Tarsal Tunnel syndrome results when the nerve that runs on the inside of the ankle joint (the posterior tibial nerve) is compressed in a small space and becomes “pinched” and “aggravated.” This is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist.

There are conservative and preventative steps that can minimize the discomfort of aggravated nerves. When these more conservative treatments fail to provide a satisfactory solution, additional procedures or surgery may be recommended. Our doctors will always begin with a conservative treatment program. If the more conservative treatment fails to provide adequate relief, you may be considered a candidate for surgery to permanently correct the problem.

Achilles Tendonitis (back of heel)

Achilles tendonitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which usually progresses to a degeneration of the tendon (Achilles tendonosis), in which the tendon loses its organized structure and can develop microscopic tears.  In some cases, chronic degeneration may result in rupture of the tendon. Click here for more information, including treatment options.

Haglund’s Deformity (back of heel)

Also known as “pump Bump” and Retrocalcaneal Exostosis”, Haglunds deformity is a painful enlargement of the back of the heel bone that becomes irritated by shoes. Click here for more information, including treatment options.
